Creative web design & development

Is your site still running Joomla 2.5 (or maybe Joomla 1.5)?

Your site wont stop functionning if you don't upgrade to the latest Joomla version, but you should consider to move to the most recent version of Joomla.

Here are a few good reasons to migrate or upgrade.

If your site is still on Joomla 1.5 it is really time to upgrade! Support and development on version 1.5 ended on September 2012.
Portions of the code used in Joomla 1.5 might be deprecated and cause compatibilty issues with some web hosts, depending on which php version you can run.
Most extensions for Joomla 1.5 are not maintained anymore by developers.
Joomla 1.5 has recently become a target of choice for hackers. (read my post about Joomla 1.5 security) If your installation is not secure enough, your site could be attacked and infected with malware.

Joomla 2.5 reached its end of life on December 31st 2014 and official support has stopped for this version too.

Is it difficult?

Joomla 1.5 to Joomla 3.x

Going from Joomla 1.5 to Joomla 3.x is more than a software update by pressing the "update for me" magic button. It requires installing a new site, redesigning the site template and migrate the content from the old database to a new one.

- For  a simple site using no, or only few, third party extensions the migration can be done within a day, and you're set with a brand new Joomla site.

- A multilingual e-commerce site using Virtuemart and Joomfish for example will require more work to move the content and build a new Joomla 3 site, reinstall and configure the e-commerce section and migrate the multilingual content from Joomfish to Joomla 3. Such a migration has to be carefully handled to ensure no data is lost and the business is not interrupted.

Joomla 2.5 to Joomla 3.x

The upgrade from Joomla version 2.5 to version 3.3 is much simpler than a migration from Joomla 1.5. The site template may need some editings due to changes in the code between the two versions.
Also some extensions may not work anymore after the upgrade and will have to be updated too.
In any case, ALWAYS do a full site backup (database and files) before doing an upgrade.
You can do the backup manually, or use the excellent component Akeeba Backup to do the job for you.

Yes, it's time to upgrade your site now,

because the longer you wait, the more tedious and (costly) the upgrade will be.
